Teacher loses everything after tornado tears through South Fulton Co. subdivision

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — It's been more than a week since a tornado rumbled through a South Fulton County subdivision so we went back to see how the repairs are going.

Channel 2's Nefertiti Jaquez came across one woman's unique story.

Venita Mitchell broke down in tears describing how a tornado ripped her life apart.

“I never saw myself being here. I never thought I would be. So yes, it hurts,” she said.

The home she and her family were renting on Caspian Drive was destroyed.

The toughest lesson she learned was letting her renter's insurance lapse.

"In the past I’ve always had it and nothing has ever happened. Then the moment I don’t have it. Bam this happens,” she said.

The Red Cross initially stepped in and helped them pay for a hotel but since Sunday, they've been homeless.

“Since leaving the hotel, we’ve been displaced we’ve had to go home to home with friends,” she said.

Right now, she and her family of six don't have enough money to find a place. Mitchell can not afford much on a teacher's salary.

"We came so close to losing our lives but we didn’t," she said.
