ATLANTA — Flowers, flowers and more flowers; Nelson's News on wsbtv.com recently accepted an invitation from the Atlanta Botanical Garden to stop by for a visit.
The Atlanta Botanical Garden is next to Piedmont Park on Piedmont Avenue in downtown Atlanta. With last year's $55 million expansion, the Garden now offers visitors 30 acres of formal and informal gardens.
"We're in the heart of Atlanta and you'd think we were miles away from the city," Atlanta Botanical Garden executive director Mary Pat Matheson said.
What To See, Do At Atlanta Botanical Garden
Visitors to the Garden said the reason for that is the fact it's so peaceful inside the Garden. With waterfalls, the Canopy Walk through the woods, an outdoor kitchen and a Children's Garden, there are plenty of spots to slow down and enjoy. And that's in addition to the tens of thousands of plants and flowers to see.
The Atlanta Botanical Garden features the largest orchid center in the US. Visitors will see more than 2000 different kinds of orchids. From there, check out the Japanese Garden, Rose Garden, Rock Garden or even the Cascades Garden.
"The Cascades Garden is really a beautiful water feature of the garden," Matheson noted. "It's the old entrance drive. It's sloped and we used it to terrace this waterfall garden so it drops on three different levels and the bottom level is a water lily pool, so that's really pretty in the summertime."

For the kids, there are frogs to see, fountains with sculptures to explore and insects to watch in the Children's Garden.
The Atlanta Botanical Garden has a number of specialty programs, too. There's Cocktails in the Garden on Thursday nights and Concerts in the Garden throughout the summer. Check out AtlantaBotanicalGarden.org for a list of those.
Nelson's News on wsbtv.com's next visit to the Atlanta Botanical Garden will feature a closer look at the newest additions to the Garden, the Canopy Walk, Edible Garden and Outdoor Kitchen.
