Woman caught in crossfire as thieves try to steal car; two now wanted

EAST POINT, Ga. — Police say a woman was shot in the leg after 2 suspected car thieves opened fire on a crowd at a gas station.

Authorities are searching for two people in connection with the attempted theft at the BP on Washington Road in East Point.

Channel 2's Nefertiti Jaquez obtained surveillance video that shows the moment the 'slider' crime turned into a shooting that left people running for cover.

Investigators say a woman driving a silver car parked at the pump and went inside to pay for gas. Police said she left her window down and valuables in plain sight.

Seconds later, a black Dodge Charger with two men inside pulled up beside her car. One passenger jumped out and hurled himself through her window, investigators said.

A man standing nearby saw the commotion and tried to stop the thief, who jumped back into the getaway car. Before peeling off, he opened fire, striking the woman, police said.

It's unclear if the suspects were trying to steal the car or the items inside.

Jaquez spoke with patrons at the gas station who were shocked at the crime.

"I think it's crazy you can stop and get gas and worry about someone stealing your car and ducking bullets," customer Patrick Miller told Jaquez. "It's sad to say, but you have to keep your eyes open. Anything can happen, anywhere."

Police are still searching for the suspects.
