NWS confirms 2 tornadoes in Pickens County as storms moved through earlier this week

PICKENS COUNTY, Ga. — Storms moved through much of metro Atlanta and north Georgia earlier this week.

The National Weather Service has now confirmed two tornadoes in one north Georgia county on July 20.

According to the NWS, and EF1 tornado popped up along Fitts Road in Pickens County and an EF0 along Caber Mill Road.

They say that after a drone surveyed the damage, it was determined that most of it was caused by straight line wind damage and not the tornadoes themselves.

No injuries have been reported as a result of these tornadoes.

Severe storms left destruction in their paths on Thursday. Severe Weather Team 2 kept with the latest tracking on those storms throughout the afternoon on Channel 2 Action News.

The storms caused the outside wall of a gym in Calhoun to collapse Thursday afternoon. The Calhoun Police Department said no one was injured but were asking people to avoid the area.

A spokesperson with Hall County Government says they experienced widespread impacts from downed trees, approximately 50, and power lines along with associated power outages, approximately 16,000 at one point.
