ATLANTA — Some $2 million in fake money is passed around metro Atlanta ever year.
Secret Service Discusses How To Spot Counterfeit Money
While counterfeit cash is a big problem, knowing what's in your wallet is the best way to fight back.
Channel 2 Action News reporter Jovita Moore talked with secret service agents in Atlanta who said as we hustle and bustle for the holidays, we're floating dollars without knowing what's real and what's not.
"Counterfeiters are using all in one scanners, all in one printers, making images and reprinting them so it's really easy with the technology that's out there," said special agent David McCain.
Agents said it's helpful to use a magnifying glass or even an ultraviolet light to find the correct markings that should be on your money. But if consumers just take a few minutes, some phony bills are easy to spot.
Be warned, you can get counterfeit money everywhere, said Malcolm Wiley, assistant special agent in charge.
"No place is immune to it, whether it's a department store, whether it's a gas station, a convenience store ... we see counterfeit currency everywhere," said Wiley.
