DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A DeKalb County woman said she watched her roof collapse and fall on top of her 4-year-old son Sunday.
She told Channel 2's Matt Johnson that she knew it was a matter of time before the ceiling collapsed.
Tonika Jackson said she has been calling her leasing office since Friday, warning them her roof was about to cave in.
Jackson said the roof came crashing down around 9 a.m.
"My son was actually laying right here and a piece of the ceiling fell on top of him," Jackson told Johnson, showing the large hole left behind by the collapse.
Jackson said her son, Tamaris had come into her bedroom during the night to sleep next to her.
He wasn't hurt by the debris, but it nearly fell on Jackson while she was holding her 2-month-old baby.
Jackson said she called the leasing office at the Paradise East Apartments in DeKalb County Friday with concerns her ceiling was in danger.
She showed Johnson pictures of her ceiling taken Saturday when water was dripping onto the floor.
On Sunday the roof gave in after a night of light rainfall.
"I talked to the rent office and they told me someone will be out," Jackson said. "No one has been out yet."
Johnson called the 24-7 emergency maintenance number, but no one responded.
The leasing office is closed on the weekends.
Meanwhile, Jackson is worried about the mildew smell that now fills her apartment and how that will affect her son's asthma.
"If they would have come Friday this would have never have happened," Jackson said.
Jackson said she has lived in the apartment for eight years and never had problems with getting something fixed.
She said she may have to take her family to a shelter for the night if no one comes out to make any kind of repairs to her ceiling.
