SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Strong winds caused a tree to fall onto a Sandy Springs home, damaging several rooms.
The massive red oak tree caused damage to several rooms inside the home on Vallo Vista Court and destroyed two SUV's parked outside.
George Garrett and his wife, Teresa, told Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri they were on opposite ends of the home when the tree fell.
"I couldn't hear it cracking. I just heard the house shaking for almost 15, 20 seconds. I thought it was an earthquake. I didn't hear the tree. I just felt the whole house shaking," George Garrett said.
Teresa Garrett said she was in the shower, but still heard the tree cracking as it fell.
"I just started screaming 'George, George, are you OK?' Because I didn't know where the tree was," Teresa Garrett said.
George Garrett estimated the tree to be at least 120 feet tall.
It went through the roof into the master bedroom as well as damaging the cars outside.
"I thought it was going to be a nice day. It's my birthday," George Garrett said.
But instead of celebrating, he spent much of the birthday trying to see if the home is structurally safe.
He said they had considered cutting down the tree in the past.
George Garrett told Viteri he worried something like this could happen, especially during high winds like there have been over recent days.
"I've been thinking about the wind. It's been 25-30 (mph) for three days in a row and I've been thinking about that tree the whole time," he said.
George Garrett said it will take around two to three days to cut up the tree and remove it, along with the damaged cars.
