Sources: Officer was racing to lunch before fatal crash

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga.,None — A DeKalb County grand jury indicted a former police officer on Tuesday in connection with a crash that killed two people.

Police say former DeKalb County officer Kristina Hambie, 25, was in her patrol unit when she drove excessively over the speed limit and collided with a car driven by Cheryl Burton near Kensington and Covington in Avondale Estates last February.  Burton died and so did her best friend, Shelley Amos, who was in the passenger seat. Hambie now faces two counts of vehicular homicide, reckless driving and violation of oath of office charges.

Amos' son says his mother didn't deserve to die this way.

"Greatly missed man. She (was), like, just the sweetest person in the world," Devron Cunningham told Channel 2’s Tom Jones.

Cunningham said his mother would still be here if not for the actions of Hambie.

"She was speeding and there were no lights. No sirens on," he said.

Investigative sources told Jones that Hambie was on the way to lunch at the time of the crash. He asked District Attorney Robert James if that was true but James responded, "I can neither confirm nor deny."

James did confirm that Hambie had no lights or audible sirens on at the time of the crash.

"But I can tell you that had she been on the way to a call, had it been official business and an emergency, lights activated so forth and so on, then we would not be standing here having this conversation right now," James said.

When Cunningham heard where sources say Hambie was going at the time of the crash, he couldn't believe it.

"She must have been real hungry then," he said.

A police department spokesman said Hambie was fired in June. Attorneys for both victims' families say they have reached settlements with the police department.
