School bus driver not facing charges after bicyclist killed

Where the cyclist was killed

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — A school bus driver will not face charges for a deadly accident involving a cyclist.

The accident happened at the intersection of Highway 278 and Alcovy Road in Covington on Tuesday morning.

The Georgia State Patrol says 45-year-old Charles Petersen was riding his bike at the intersection when a school bus hit him.

Channel 2's Carl Willis talked to Peterson's friend Buddy Coyner, who believes Petersen was on his way to or from a CVS when it happened.

"I seen him just the day before; him and his daughter, they come up the street and they'd wave," Coyner said.

Neighbors say Petersen was a good man and they still can't believe what happened.

"He was just seemed always happy, you know, the times that we saw him," said a neighbor named Elizabeth.

Investigators say the bus had the right-of-way and the driver will not face charges. There were no students on board at the time.
