Abandoned house becoming safety concern for neighbors

HALL COUNTY, Ga. — Neighbors of an abandoned house in Hall County say they are worried about how overgrown it has become.

“It’s really sad that it had to get to this point,” Christie Melendrez said.

The overgrown weeds down the street from Melendrez's house are an eyesore but that’s not what has her upset.

“It needs to be cleaned up,” she said.

It’s how the four-to five-foot weeds block the view of oncoming traffic.

“We have almost been hit by 18-wheelers at times,” she said.

“People will be blowing and blowing but we can't help it we can't see we have to get out.”

Melendrez and her daughter showed Channel 2’s Matt Johnson around the abandoned property in Gainesville.

“It makes you feel bad to have it look like this,” she said.

What is now a dumping ground at Industrial Boulevard and Mountcrest Drive used to be where Melendrez played as a child, she said.

Now she has one thought when she looks for traffic before turning.

“That one of us (doesn’t) get killed,” she told Johnson. “It’s really bad.”

Johnson got a response over the phone from Jamie Philips, who says her family owns the property.

She said the much-needed cleanup has been tied up in permit applications for months.

She said as soon they get that straightened out, the rest will be taken care of.

There’s still no time table is in sight for when the unsightly house will be demolished.

Meanwhile, Melendrez has one request.

“Try to protect our family and other families from having wrecks,” Melendrez said.

Johnson contacted the city of Gainesville on Sunday but had not heard back as of Sunday night.
