MACON, Ga. — A Mercer University student-athlete was shot and killed in Macon on Tuesday.
Police say Jibri Bryan, of Savannah, was shot inside a car near a downtown convenience store around 4 p.m.
A second man, who arrived at the scene with the shooter in a 2012 white Nissan Sentra, was also shot and taken to a nearby hospital.
Bryan was a graduate student who had attended Mercer for six years. He was also a member of the school’s basketball program.
“The Mercer athletic family is deeply saddened by Jibri's passing. Jibri was always cheerful and greeted everyone in the department with a smile. He will not only be missed by his basketball family but by all of us in the University Athletic Department,” Athletic Director Jim Cole said.
According to the school’s website, Bryan played guard. He was a part of the 2014 team that upset top-ranked Duke during the school's first March Madness appearance since 1985. Head basketball coach Bob Hoffman said he was a special young man and a great contributor to the team.
“He was important to us in every way. I loved him and cared about him from the very first time he was on our campus. We grew to be very close over the years. Our thoughts and prayers are with his special family,” Hoffman said.
The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting.
