MARIETTA, Ga.,None — Marietta City School employees are about to see something some of them probably didn't expect to see -- a bonus.
The school board approved a one-time compensation for all employees equal to about 1 percent of their base salary. The district said that for an average teacher making about $50,000 a year, that bonus would equal $500.
"It was a delightful surprise," said Assistant Superintendent Dr. Debra Pickett McCracken. She will get the bonus, too. "I'm sure every employee in this district, when they read the e-mail late last night or early this morning, was just as delighted."
Channel 2's Richard Elliot sat down with Marietta School Superintendent Dr. Emily Lembeck and asked about the compensation.

She said that, as for other school districts, the past three years have been especially rough on everyone. The district did have to undergo layoffs and furlough days during the depths of the recession. She commended her employees for the work they've done over those three years.
"Our teachers have been doing more with less as have others throughout the school district. All our employees for that matter," said Lembeck.
But Lembeck told Elliot that because of "pretty aggressive" budgeting and an unexpected increase in tax revenues, the district was able to hand out this compensation.
"In this last budget session, our board had said that if there's any way as you go through this year, will you see if there's any way you can give some additional compensation to our employees?" said Dr. Lembeck.
The one-time compensation will be included in employee paychecks.
