Man sentenced to 17 years for Craigslist armed robbery

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A Marietta man has been sentenced to prison after being convicted of armed robbery and aggravated assault.

A Cobb County jury convicted Michael Dayquan Armstead, 21, in the May 16, 2014 armed robbery and aggravated assault of three Gwinnett County men.

According to officials, money, cellphones and keys were taken from the victims.

The victims were set up through a fake Craigslist advertisement for the sale of power tools and robbed at gunpoint by three men and one woman in a parking lot at the Country Hearth Inn and Suites at Windy Hill Road and Leland Drive. Three co-defendants previously pleaded guilty in the case.

“The jury sent a message to criminals who prey on innocent people through websites like Craigslist. “The citizens of Cobb County won’t stand for this type of violent crime.”

“This case was a cautionary tale for all people who buy and sell through Craigslist, because this robbery occurred with the sun still out and in a public place,” ADA Camarillo said. “I urge the people in our communities to utilize programs set up through their local police departments to conduct these transactions.”

After the verdict late Friday night, Cobb Superior Court Judge Ann Harris immediately sentenced Armstead to 17 years in prison.

Marietta attorney Rick Christian represented Armstead, who has been in custody since his arrest on the night of the attack.

Cobb Police, led by Detective Geoffrey Edgecomb, investigated the case. The trial began last Tuesday.
