Man arrested, accused of using stolen ID during traffic stop

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A Gwinnett County man is praising police after he said they busted a man who tried to steal his identity.

Duluth police released body camera footage showing the moment an accused thief tried to use Alex Park's ID during a traffic stop. Park lost his ID three months earlier in an LA Fitness parking lot, but he never filed a police report.

Park got a call from Duluth police Wednesday saying someone tried to use his driver's license.

Police pulled over Thanh Nguyen, 47, in a white Mercedes for allegedly blocking traffic at Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Abbotts Bridge Road.

It didn't take long before the minor traffic stop became serious.

Nguyen claimed the ID belonged to his friend Alex Park and said their driver's licenses got switched around at a Buckhead nightclub.

However, Park told Channel 2 Action News he had never met Nguyen before.

Park said he can laugh now knowing that Nguyen cannot prey on anyone else.

“That guy’s not smart. That guy’s not smart,” Park said.

While Channel 2's Michael Seiden was reviewing the body camera footage, he could hear one of the officers say that he's stopped Nguyen on five separate occasions, but apparently, this was the first time he had used another person's ID.
