DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A DeKalb County man is accused of trying to kill his best friend after shooting him in the head.
Jamal Kerns, 20, is accused of shooting Malik Golar, 19, multiple times on June 6 while he was sitting in his car.
Golar, 19, was unable to walk or speak coherently after the shooting. He took his first steps Friday.
"Just to see him like that, it was just very heartbreaking," said his mother, LaRica Golar.
LaRica Golar said the person accused of shooting her son is someone she treated like a son for years.
"The part that hurts the most is that it was somebody that was close to us," she said.
During Kerns' interrogation, he allegedly admitted to killing a relative two weeks before.

According to a warrant, Kerns told police where he hid the 9 mm gun he used to kill his cousin, Keschon Kerns.
The victim's body was found in the driveway of the home they shared with their grandfather.
LaRica Golar said her son believe Kerns tried to kill him because he questioned his alibi and his possible involvement in his cousin's murder.
"He's better, but we have a long road ahead of us," she said.
Doctors said it will take about a year for Malik Golar to make a full recovery.
His family has set up a GoFundMe page if you would like to help.
