Local county going mobile with COVID-19 vaccine to reach its residents

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County is going mobile with its vaccination efforts. The county is making an effort to reach its residents where it hopes to quickly vaccinate many more people.

James Knuckles is a Gwinnett County resident who has been vaccinated. Knuckles wasn’t initially in support of getting the COVID-19 vaccine.

“I went to Vietnam twice man — and some little virus. I’m going to take my chance, man,” Knuckles said.

Knuckles did eventually have a change of heart and decided to get vaccinated.

“They are talking about you coming out acting crazy,” Knuckles said in response to rumors of the vaccine’s side effects.

The alleged side effects have kept many away from getting the vaccine.

“A lot of people are scared of the vaccine, man,” Gwinnett County resident Eddie Ingram said.

Gwinnett County Public Health officials are aware that this is the sentiment shared by a portion of the county’s residents. So health officials decided that meeting the residents in their respective communities could ease some of the angst of those deciding on whether or not to get the vaccine.

“Different areas of the community that may have access issues, like transportation that may not be able to come to Gwinnett Place Mall. Or there may be various levels of trust levels,” said Chad Wasdin with the Gwinnett, Newton and Rockdale Department of Public Health.

The county is still waiting on the arrival of the medical units and its first shipment of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. County leaders hope to have wheels on the road and shots in arms by the end of the month.

“If they come into the neighborhood and come into the churches, that would help a lot. They would be comfortable with it,” Ingram said.
