DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — The Austell police department is giving an update on K9 officer Jerry Lee, who was wounded in the line of fire last weekend.
Spokesperson Natalie Poulk said that Jerry Lee was at the doctor Friday morning for a bandage change and won’t need to come back for a week since he’s recovering “nicely.”

Poulk said that while many are praying for a full recovery, they have have determined that he will probably won’t be working again. They are planning to have a celebration soon for his retirement.
Jerry Lee was shot during a chase after police said a man ran from a safety checkpoint early Sunday morning.

K9 Lee helped tracked down the suspect, who exchanged gunfire with an officer. One of the bullets hit Lee in his front leg. Fellow officers rushed him to an animal hospital.
The man was later found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
