Henry County Schools to host meetings to discuss rise in violence at schools

HENRY COUNTY, Ga. — Henry County parents have been invited to a meeting Thursday night with school district leaders to discuss the recent rise in school violence.

School violence has been an issue across metro Atlanta, including Henry County.

Both county and school leaders now want to bring parents into the conversation on how to keep students safe.

“I wake up every morning just very focused in on what we do to keep kids safe and to make decisions,” Mary Elizabeth Davis, Henry County Schools Superintendent, told Channel 2 Action News. “All of our safety and security investments that have occurred over the last six years come right from the voices, perspectives and experiences of students, parents and our staff.”

One instance of violence at Henry County Schools was when a student at Ola Middle School was sliced in the face with a knife by a classmate.

Channel 2′s Audrey Washington spoke with parents, who are now concerned about their children’s safety after seeing a video that captured the incident.

In the video, you can see a crowd of students watching as two girls beat each other in the middle of the school lunchroom.

In a statement, officials with Henry County schools wrote in part:

“The initial investigation revealed that a small object with a sharp edge caused the injury to a student. The object has since been confiscated by school administrators and law enforcement officials, and the student is now in the custody of law enforcement facing pending charges.”

Thursday night’s meeting will occur at the Henry County School Board offices on Zach Hinton Parkway at 6 p.m.

There will also be a meeting on Tuesday, April 25th, for parents who cannot attend the first meeting.
