Gwinnett police activating new speed cameras in 4 school zones

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Starting this week, drivers may notice new speed cameras in Gwinnett County school zones.

The first of four planned cameras will turn on Monday at Duncan Creek Elementary School in Hoschton. It’s part of the Gwinnett County Police Department’s school zone safety programming.

Earlier this year, the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners voted to approve the installation of school zone speed detection cameras.

Other cameras will be installed within the next few months at Anderson-Livsey Elementary in Snellville, Graves Elementary in Norcross and Lanier High School in Gainesville.

Police said they have placed signs to notify drivers Monday at Duncan Creek Elementary. Drivers who are caught speed will be issued a warning for the first 30 days. The cameras will start issuing citations on Dec. 8.

The cameras will be operational for one hour before school starts, through the school day and one hour after school ends.

The first fine is $75 and any fine after that will cost $125.

“Because these violations are considered civil in nature, no points will be assessed on the driver’s license. If the violation is not resolved, the vehicle’s registration will be suspended and title transfer will be blocked,” police said in a release.

When the other cameras are installed, there will be a 30 day warning period before citations are issued.
