Plan for 280 homes near wildlife sanctuary draws large community response

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Supporters of a Gwinnett County wildlife sanctuary say they are skeptical of a plan to build hundreds of homes near the animals.

An attorney with the developers met with a standing room only crowd at MC3 Church on Stone Mountain Highway.

Their plan calls for 280 homes near the Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary.

Middleburg Communities has said there is a need for housing in the area.

An attorney with the developer says he hopes to work with the community before the area has a chance to be re-zoned for housing.

Supporters of the sanctuary say they worry how the houses would affect the animals and the Yellow River.

“A development looming on top of it, from the noise, the light and the security, it would be a disaster,” said Carol Kelly, a sanctuary supporter.

The developers say they are in the first phase of re-zoning process and welcome a chance for future community meetings.
