Man dead after jumping from bridge while swimming with friends

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A spokesperson for Gwinnett County tells Channel 2 Action News a man who jumped off a bridge and into the water at Settle Bridge Park Wednesday afternoon has died.

We first told you about this story on Channel 2 Action News at 6. According to firefighters, the 21-year-old was playing with a group of friends when he jumped in the water.

One of the friends jumped into the water to save him as the other friend called 911, according to officials. The friend in the water found him about 100 yards downstream from the bridge.

We're told the victim became combative and the friend was unable to rescue him without placing himself in extreme danger.

Several agencies converged on the river to find him.

Officials say he was found two feet beneath the surface of the water and was caught by tree debris under water in a 10-foot deep area.

Once crews recovered the victim, they began performing CPR before taking him to the hospital. He died shortly after arrival.
