Community donates $56K to help KSU student fighting for her life after pulmonary embolism

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A Kennesaw University student is fighting to recover after a pulmonary embolism -- and her family has the community to thank for helping to get her the treatment she needs.

Trinity Hunter Steverson, who is the daughter of two law enforcement officers, was walking with her dog in her family’s backyard when she suddenly collapsed five weeks ago. The pulmonary embolism caused her to go into cardiac arrest.

Steverson was just two weeks away from graduating with honors from KSU and was already getting job interviews when tragedy suddenly struck.

Steverson spent weeks in a coma at an Atlanta hospital and was recently transferred to a specialty program in Texas, where her parents are by her side.

Her cousin, Taylor Staggers, said the family is hoping Steverson will survive.

“The doctors are being pretty hopeful,” Staggers said. “They aren’t giving any promises.”

Channel 2′s Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Tony Thomas learned that the community donated nearly $60,000 to pay for the specialty program that could save Steverson’s life. A GoFundMe set up to help pay her medical expenses has collected nearly $56,000.

“It’s definitely been a comfort to know our family isn’t alone and that people are able, amongst our differences, that people are actually able to come together,” Staggers said.

Steverson’s parents said that her eyes are now open and she can move her toes, but she has a long road ahead.

The encouragement and support from the community is what is keeping them going.

“This is a sign when people do things right,” Staggers said. “Knowing that your community will recognize that when you are in need.”
