Georgia State bans smoking on campus

ATLANTA — Georgia State University has introduced a new non-smoking policy on campus.

The downtown Atlanta school banned smoking Tuesday after a vote by the school senate. The policy is getting mixed reviews.

"Smoking might kill, but it's my choice," student Joe Proenza told Channel 2's Jeff Dore as he lit up a cigarette.

Meanwhile, other students said they were fed up with smoke on campus.

"I have to fight through these big smoke clouds of a person smoking here, a person smoking there, a group of smoking over here," Teighlor Bradley said.

Some students questioned whether the policy is enforceable.

"Are you going to smack cigarettes out of people's hands?" Tiana Taylor said.

University President Mark Becker said, "There's literally a self-enforcement situation. We're not going to be stalking around arresting people left and right."

He said on other non-smoking campuses, the community simply informs each other and it usually works.
