Storms down trees, power lines in metro Atlanta

ATLANTA — Severe thunderstorms downed trees and power lines across metro Atlanta Wednesday night.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brad Nitz said at least one tree fell on a home and multiple trees fell in Fayette County.

Most of Georgia was under a Level 2 threat for severe weather Wednesday. Damaging wind gusts, hail and heavy rain were the biggest threats.

Severe Weather Team 2 is tracking how long the dangerous heatwave will last, on Channel 2 Action News.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Western Haralson County and Southwestern Polk County until 10:15 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Floyd and Bartow counties until 9:15 p.m.

Georgia Power estimates that around 16,000 people across 45 counties across the state are without power. Clayton County is at the top of that list, with near 5,000 people without power.

Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Carroll, Douglas, Coweta and Fulton counties until 7:30 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Coweta County until 7:30 p.m.

6:05 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Coweta and Fayette counties until 6:45 p.m.

5:49 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Fayette, Henry and Clayton counties until 6:30 p.m.

An excessive heat warning has been issued for Barrow, Butts, Clarke, Greene, Jackson, Jasper, Madison, Morgan, Newton, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Putnam, Rockdale and Walton counties.

Here is what else to know about Wednesday:

  • High temperatures will last all the way into the evening.
  • Heat index values could climb over 110 degrees in the excessive heat warning areas.
  • There is also a Level 1 or 2 risk for strong, severe storms.
  • Level 2 threat includes damaging wind gusts, hail and heavy rain.
