Meetup to sell sneakers leaves man with bullet in chest, deputies say

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies say a meetup to sell sneakers left one man with a bullet in his chest. The shooter is still out there somewhere.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened in Acworth. The victim is still recovering at WellStar Kennestone Hospital.

Channel 2′s Audrey Washington was at the Oak Grove precinct in Cherokee County, where authorities have a message for people buying or selling merchandise.

Deputies want people to conduct these types of deals in what are called the transaction zones.

“More and more people are meeting strangers to sell or buy things," said Jay Baker, a spokesman for the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies told Washington the 24-year-old victim contacted another man through an online app.

On Sunday, the two agreed to meet up at the Walden Pond Apartments in Acworth for the sneaker sale.

“Apparently when the person arrived to buy the shoes there was some sort of altercation and shots were fired. The victim was shot in the arm and chest," Baker said.

The shooter took off in a gold Infiniti. Deputies later found the car in Cobb County.

The victim managed to get away and drove to his girlfriend’s home in Cherokee County where he called 911.

While deputies search for the shooter, they are reminding people to always conduct meetup sales or buys at designated transaction zones.

These zones are located at different precincts and are under 24/7 surveillance.

“But heaven forbid something were to happen, like a set-up, at a minimum it would be caught on camera," Baker said.
