Here’s how you can get your money back if your flight gets delayed or cancelled this summer

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Whether it’s staffing shortages or the actual weather, airline passengers have dealt with delays and cancellations this summer.

But did you know that even extreme heat can cause delays to your flight?

This is because heat makes the air thinner and planes must be lighter to get off the ground.

If your flight gets canceled this summer, what can you do to get your money back?

Channel 2′s Jorge Estevez spoke to Ted Rossman, a senior analyst with Bank Rate to try and find an answer to this question.

“It’s important to understand the rules. If it’s truly the airline’s fault, like it was some sort of mechanical issue, or they made a big schedule change, then you’re entitled to a full refund, if you’re not able to get where you’re going,” Rossman said. “If it’s weather, though, then they can kind of hide behind that excuse and offer you little or nothing in the way of compensation.”

So what recourse do you have if your flight gets canceled and airlines refuse to give a refund?

Rossman advised looking into credit cards and travel insurance policies.

“A lot of cards have valuable trip cancellation and interruption protection where they might actually help you out with alternate flights, or maybe it’s a hotel stay or maybe it’s meal reimbursements, credit card travel insurance, or if you paid for travel insurance,” Rossman said.
