The order goes into effect immediately and the city council will vote on a more permanent version on Aug. 24.

The ordinance does not apply to private property or vehicles. It also excludes children under the age of 10 and people who cannot wear a mask for medical reasons.

Violating the ordinance is a $25 fine for the first offense and $50 for each additional violation.

Other cities including Atlanta, Savannah and Athens have started to institute their own mask rules as cases grow.

Fulton County has seen about 4,000 new cases of COVID-19 over the past two weeks, according to the Georgia Department of Health website.
