Channel 2 reporter teaches students how to put on a tie

ATLANTA — Channel 2's Tom Jones took some time out to help teach some local students the importance of appearance.

Bob Mackey and Jones routinely travel to schools around the metro area teaching children how to put on ties.

Mackey is the founder of The Power of the Knot program, which is based on teaching young men how to tie a necktie and the importance of how appearance can impact impressions.

Mackey says students are uplifted and focused on how well they look when they wear a tie, and he urges students to be confident, have good character and make good choices.

Mackey grew up without a father and felt lost doing some of the things young men were supposed to be taught by their fathers -- like tying a tie.

So he works to fill in that gap for other children.

"It's our responsibility to help take care and mold the next generation," Mackey says.

Jones helps because he knows the benefit of being well-dressed and well-groomed.

"People give you a certain amount of respect when you have on a tie and you look neat," Jones said. "Doors are opened for you."

So to help kids learn this valuable fashion tool that could make life a little easier for them ... why not knot?

Jones also talks to them about how it's more than looking good.

"You have to develop your brain and develop a plan to be successful at life," Jones explains.

The students are always excited about the Power of the Knot venture. One kid told Jones, "I'm taking this tie home and I'm going to keep practicing until I get it just right."

The students get to keep the ties after Mackey and Jones teach them how to tie them.
