State celebrates Morehouse School of Medicine contributions at its Golden Anniversary

ATLANTA — On the campus of the Morehouse School of Medicine in Southwest Atlanta, many of the students of today, doctors of tomorrow are from Georgia, and most will one day practice medicine in Georgia.

A fact administrators are quite proud of.

“Morehouse School of Medicine started from humble beginnings. But how much we have grown over our 50 years of doing this work,” Dr. Joseph Tyndall said.

Tyndall, the school’s dean, was welcomed at the State Capitol this day, as members of the House and Senate congratulated the school on its Golden Anniversary over that time.

More than 3,000 students have graduated, including 1,900 physicians. Administrators say 60% of them practice medicine in Georgia. But many, many more are needed.

“We still have counties that do not have any healthcare providers. We still have over 50 counties that do not have a pediatrician. We still have over 15 or 20 that do not have a family practitioner,” School of Medicine President Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice says.

Rice says Morehouse aims to change that.

They are working to find the best of the best especially from underserved communities to come here, learn here, — and one day treat patients here. They say it is not just the mission, but a movement to improve healthcare access across Georgia and healthcare equity.

“It is not politics. It is not political. It is about giving people what they need, when they need it, in the amount they need—to reach their optimal level of health,” Rice said.
