ATLANTA — A state lawmaker filed new legislation to remove the property tax fees for vehicles from those inheriting one from a dead relative.
House Bill 186, filed by Rep. Jordan Ridley, would eliminate the title ad valorem tax on inherited vehicles, such as cars, trucks, boats and more.
Currently, state law requires those inheriting vehicles to pay the same tax on it that they would when buying a new or used vehicle from a dealer or other business.
Under the proposed legislation, immediate family members of a vehicle owner who receive it through inheritance or the terms of a last will and testament would be free from the normal ad valorem tax, which is normally 1% of the fair market value and a local title fee from their county tax office.
Should the bill pass, any additional laws that may conflict with it would be repealed.
