ATLANTA — A bill passed in the 2024 legislative session created a statewide property tax and homestead exemption program for Georgia county governments, cities and school districts.
Now, lawmakers have proposed extending the deadline to stay out of the program.
The legislation, House Bill 581, included a provision for the various governments and municipal agencies to opt out of the program but set a deadline of March 1.
Since the start of 2025, dozens of municipalities and governing authorities have chosen to opt out of the program, including the City of Atlanta, Clayton County, Powder Springs, Gwinnett County, Avondale Estates, Decatur, Clayton County Schools, Cobb County and many more in the metro Atlanta area.
Lawmakers introduced legislation Jan. 16 that gives the various smaller governments and authorities more time to opt out of the statewide homestead exemption, pushing it back from March 1 to May 1.
