HALL COUNTY, Ga. — A 15-year-old high school student was killed Thursday when the car he was riding in crashed. Alfredo Mosqueda was killed when Georgia State Patrol says, Marco Cruz, 19, ran into a tree.
On Friday, Cruz's grandmother returned to the scene and left flowers and a cross at the tree where Mosqueda died. She says she's praying for the victim's family but insists it was an accident.
"Marco said he wished it was him that had died," said Brenda Jaworski. "He was just trying to give the little boy a ride home."
According to investigators, Cruz was driving his 1998 Honda Civic on Highway 13 in Gainesville when he hit a construction barrel.
He then overcorrected and the passenger side of the vehicle slammed into a tree. Mosqueda died, and Cruz sustained minor injuries.
GSP says charges are pending the completion of the GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team investigation. A witness said it had rained moments before the crash.
"It had downpoured," said Wanda Martin. "So the roads were really wet."
Martin even ran up to Cruz's car to see if she could help.
"The driver was out of the car and leaned into the passenger seat, holding the young man's head up, like on each side," she said.
A makeshift memorial has grown at Highway 13 in front of Chicopee Baptists Church where the crash occurred. Jaworski says she was paying her respects for the victim and his family but hopes her grandson doesn't face serious charges.
