Georgia fire station severely damaged in fire, 1 injured after roof partially collapsed

Monroe County fire station A fire broke out while firefighters were away from Station 10 in Monroe County, Georgia.

SMARR, Ga. — A middle Georgia fire station was heavily damaged after it caught on fire late Saturday night.

The Monroe County Emergency Services department posted on Facebook that a fire broke out around 11 p.m. at Station 10 off Evans Road in Smarr, Georgia.

The department said there were no MCES personnel present at the time of the fire and by the time they arrived, the station was already in flames. The department said crews tried to put out the fire but a part of the roof collapsed.

One firefighter, Battalion Chief Clay Walton, injured his knee as they retreated. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Firefighters fought the fire for more than three hours and continued monitoring for hotspots. A pumper truck used at an earlier call was parked inside the station and was also damaged.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
