Driver: APD officer pointed gun, yelled ‘This is my car’

ATLANTA,None — Rashid McCalll says a trip to the post office quickly turned bizarre Friday morning.

"I thought I was about to be shot," McCall said. "I mean, this whole situation made no sense."

McCall said he had just come out of the post office on Crown Road in southeast Atlanta, gotten into his car and was about to exit the parking lot when he says a man came toward him pointing a weapon and yelling.

"When I looked over, I saw a gentleman who had raised a gun and pointed it at me and said, ‘This is my car, this is my car,'" McCall said.

"And when he pointed the gun at me, I just froze. He took another step, opened my door and he said, ‘This is my car.' He looked in the front, glanced in the back and he said, ‘Oh, this isn't my car. I'm sorry.'"

That's when McCall said he realized the man was a police officer.

The officer was identified as Sgt. James Ebb, a 25-year veteran of the Atlanta Police Department.

McCall said his four-door sedan looks nothing like the marked police SUV that the sergeant was driving.

"It doesn't say Atlanta police on it, it doesn't have sirens on. It's not affiliated with the city at all, so this can't be his car," McCall said.

McCall said he asked to see an Atlanta police supervisor who came to the scene and questioned everyone involved before allowing the sergeant to drive off.

"I felt like he should have been arrested. I felt like he should have been led away in handcuffs right then and there. At the very least, he should not have been able to leave this post office with his weapon," McCall said.

An Atlanta police spokesperson issued a statement saying, "We are aware of this incident. The officer has been placed on an administrative assignment in a non-law enforcement capacity and the incident is being referred to our office of professional standards."

"He would do the public a favor to voluntarily offer his resignation," McCall said.

McCall said he will be filing a formal complaint with the Atlanta Police Department on Monday.
