ATLANTA — It's privacy versus money in your pocket.
Another insurance company has rolled out a plan to put a device in cars to monitor safety.
Good drivers who install the so-called black box can get a discount.
But Channel 2 Action News consumer adviser Clark Howard said not everyone thinks it's a good idea.
Bob McNally would like to save money on his car insurance. One day, his insurance agent suggested a new plan that could save him up to 30 percent on his rates.
"I said, ‘Yes, sign me up.' But what I didn't realize until the package came in the mail was it's a program to monitor my driving while I'm driving," McNally said.
Progressive already has the monitors in Georgia. Soon, Allstate will be pitching its blue boxes for Georgia drivers.
Insurance experts say it's a win-win.
"You can go on the website and you can take a look at your data so they know what your data is and so do you, and it gives you some assistance in learning how to drive a little bit better, a little bit smoother, without dong too much erratic driving," said Dave Colmans of the Georgia Insurance Information Service.
But McNally said he sent the little blue box right back to his insurance company. He said it's a matter of privacy.
Howard said he likes the devices. He said one study found that three quarters of drivers changed their driving behavior and started driving better because they knew big brother was in the back seat with them.
