Local churches, charities distribute free clothes, food, essential items to community

Several churches, charity organizations Decatur event Churches and charities came together in Decatur to give away free food and items to the community.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Several churches, charity organizations and dozens of volunteers came together on July 4 with a common cause: distributing free food, clothing, furniture and other essential household items.

The annual event took place at the Austin Oaks Apartments on Glenwood Road in Decatur.

The driving force behind the community outreach is Father Roy Lee, a local Catholic priest, who also runs several mission groups, including one seeking an end to racial injustice, discrimination and violence.

“When the praises go up, the Blessings come down. Let’s not just talk the talk, but walk the walk,” Lee said.

The priest thanked all the volunteers from nearly a half dozen parishes in metro Atlanta who helped to collect and distribute the many items.

“Remember the word from MLK: The time is always right, to do what is right,” Lee said.
