ATLANTA,None — The Atlanta Falcons named Mike Nolan as their new defensive coordinator on Tuesday.
Nolan, who spent the last two seasons in Miami, replaces Brian VanGorder who left for the same role at Auburn University.
“Mike Nolan is an established coordinator in this league. He brings more than 25 years of NFL experience to our team and has been a coordinator at this level for 14 years,” Falcons head coach Mike Smith said.
Under Nolan, the Dolphins ranked 15th defensively, but allowed the 6th fewest points per game in 2011. The Dolphins also ranked among the top ten defenses in the league in 2010.
Nolan has also held defensive roles with the Denver Broncos, Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants. He served as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers for four seasons.
