Dawgs in the Draft: J.R. Reed following in father’s footsteps to NFL

The Georgia Bulldogs could see a lot of talent go in this year’s NFL Draft. Star safety J.R Reed is poised to join Deandre Baker as the only members of the Dawgs secondary to get drafted over the last five seasons.

Channel 2′s Alison Mastrangelo had a chance to catch up with Reed as he continues to get ready for draft night and the drills he has been focused on.

“A lot of speed work, not dropping off from where my combine training was. DB drills Saturdays," Reed said. "Sometimes if my dad gets bored, we’ll pass the football together.”

Channel 2 is your official home for ALL 3 days of the 2020 NFL Draft. WATCH LIVE on ABC starting Thursday April 23 at 8 p.m, Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at Noon.

The path to the NFL is something Reed’s father knows well.

Jake Reed played as a wide receiver in the NFL for 12 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints. JR says his dad taught him a lot about what it takes to play at the next level.

"Overall, be a pro about your business and what you do through out your whole life. That just started with me at a young age,” Reed said.

Just like every other NFL hopeful, Reed has had to get use to FaceTime and Zoom interviews with teams. He’s learned how to make sure his football knowledge and personality shine through.

“Just to smile. If you can smile while you’re talking, it brings a lot of joy out of your body. A very passionate and happy person about football,” he said.

Reed wants whichever team decides to draft him that he won’t disappoint.

“They are not only getting the best safety in the draft, but a great player on and off the field and a play maker. A guy that is going to be around the league a long time and going to be a pro the first time he walks in,” Reed said.
