Young Sisters Killed In Mobile Home Fire

SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. — Two young sisters were killed in a mobile home fire in Spalding County early Tuesday morning.

The fire was at the Ponderosa Mobile Home Park on Patterson Road, according to officials at the Spalding County Sheriff's Office.

A 2-year-old girl and her 5-year-old sister were killed when they were unable to escape the intense flames.

The girls' mother and neighbors attempted to save the children but the fire was too much.

One neighbor, Tiffany Nix, said she heard the girls' screaming and ran outside to find the mobile home engulfed in flames. Nix broke out a window with her hand in an attempt to save them, but was unable to get inside the back bedroom where the girls were. She suffered injuries to her hand.

The girls' mother, who neighbors identified as Ashley Johnson, appeared to be in shock at the scene. Channel 2 Action News reporter Jeff Dore said the mother was completely covered in soot and suffered blisters to her face when she tried to save her children.

"I heard (their mother) hollering, 'My babies are in there, my babies are in there,'" said Nix.

Another neighbor also attempted to save the children by kicking in a hole underneath the mobile home. The flames were too intense for him to get inside.

The girls' father, who neighbors identified as Russell Johnson, was at work when the fire started.

According to neighbors, the girls are 5-year-old Asilyn Cinnamon and 2-year-old Belle Johnson.

Officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire. Authorities are looking into the possibility the fire was started by a space heater.
