Woman says apartment infested with bed bugs

DECATUR, Ga.,None — A local mother said she is fed up after dealing with a bed bug infestation for months.

She said it was bad enough that she has had to deal with them, but when they got into her baby’s diaper – that was the last straw.

“The day before yesterday, I sat him on the couch and he started crying. I’m looking at him wondering why he’s crying (and then) I picked him up and saw the bed bug. It was biting him,” said Queen Carter.

Carter said bed bugs have invaded her unit at the Robins Landing Apartments in Decatur. She said she’s been there less than a year, and the bed bugs have been there almost as long.

“But if I knew they were like that I wouldn’t have moved over here,” Carter said.

Carter said the bugs, which get worse at night, crawl all over the mattresses, the couch, the floor and her 7-month-old’s unused diapers.

Carter said the bugs seem to be everywhere except the walk-in closet in the bedroom, so that’s where the family sleeps.

“It’s like me, my brother, my little boy, and my baby daddy all sleeping in a closet,” Carter said.

She said management sent an exterminator to the apartment before.

“They came out and sprayed and it got worse,” Carter said.

The family said they have thrown out one set of living room furniture and got another. Now the new furniture is infested.

Carter said management told her there wasn’t much more they could do.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Eric Philips confronted management about the problem. An office worker said, “No comment.” But shortly after that, an exterminator arrived at Carter’s apartment.

A company spokesperson told Philips the exterminator didn’t see bed bugs the last time he was in the apartment in May, but he saw them this time and will treat specifically for them now.

Carter said she’ll get the additional treatments, but she is not optimistic they will help. She said she would like management to move her to another unit until she can move out.

“I have a little boy. He’s 7-months-old. We can deal with this, we can do without, but not my son,” Carter said.
