Woman Finds Website Posting Private Information Of Dead Grandfather; Celebrities

None — A Metro Atlanta woman told Channel 2 Action News she's fighting to remove her dead grandfather's private information from a public website.

Kathy Kelley told Channel 2's Sean Callebs she found the information on an ancestry website run by the Latter-Day Saints.

The site contained information about her late grandfather, including his Social Security number, according to Kelley. LINK: familysearch.org

"This isn't comforting at all. It is on the World Wide Web for people that really have no business obtaining this information and want to use it for malicious intent," Kelley said.

Kelley said a cousin in Texas who passed away a few years ago had her identity stolen as well. The site also includes Social Security numbers for Michael Jackson, Peter Jennings and President Barack Obama's late grandmother, according to Kelley.

"Someone who's looking to commit fraud could go into the obituaries, pull that name up, see that they passed on, and go to that site," said Kelley.

Channel 2 Action News called a representative for the Latter-Day Saints website who said the church got information on the deceased from the Social Security office.

The information came from a death master file and is not doctored, according to the representative.

An explanation on the Social Security site said the private information actually helps fight fraud and terrorism by allowing companies to check identities for fraud.
