STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. — The wife of an Army reservist who was shot to death by a fellow reservist at a post south of Atlanta says her husband was a family man who loved to watch movies and fish.
Master Sgt. Pedro Mercado died at the U.S. Army Reserve Center located on Fort Gillem after he was shot several times Thursday afternoon. The New York native was 47.
The suspect turned himself in and remains in custody. Authorities say his name will be released if charges are filed.
Kimberly Mercado says her husband was a great soldier and loved the Army.
Friends and family gathered at his home in Stockbridge on Sunday.
"His family is here, his kids are here today, a day we remember fathers and Pedro was a good father and a good husband. So it's sort of tough today with him not around," said family friend Robert Ervin.
Mercado and the suspect were assigned to the Army Medical Department Professional Management Command. The unit helps with the recruitment, retention and readiness of medical units and personnel.
