Deputies with the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that they are continuing to search for a suspect who attacked a woman in her home late Saturday night.

“She’s hurt, she doesn’t understand why someone would do something to her and she’s 99 years old. She doesn’t bother anyone,” Wallace Wimbush, the victim’s son, told WDBJ.

In their news release, deputies said they were called to the home by a medical alert company, which reported a burglary and assault. When they arrived at the scene, deputies said they found the victim with a hand injury.

Investigators told WDBJ that they believe the suspect cut the victim’s phone line, but the victim used a medical alert necklace she wore to call for help.

“The call actually came in from a medic alert necklace,” Captain Corey Webb told WDBJ. “The victim was able to make the call herself.”

Deputies told the Danville Register & Bee that the suspect robbed the victim, but didn’t specify what was stolen.

The victim was flown to a hospital and received seven stitches in her hand before she was released, WDBJ reported.

On Monday, deputies updated their investigation, saying that anyone who provides information leading to an arrest will be eligible for a reward up to $5,000.

“Whoever you are, I hope we find you,” Wimbush told WDBJ. “I’m going to be out there. I’m putting money out there for reward. Whoever did this, we want to catch you.”
