Acclaimed trumpeter Roy Hargrove dies at 49

NEW YORK — Acclaimed trumpeter Roy Hargrove is dead at the age of 49.

NPR reported that Hargrove died Friday night in New York City. The cause of death was cardiac arrest, according to his manager, Larry Clothier. Hargrove had been hospitalized for a kidney issue and had been receiving dialysis for years, according to the NPR report.

Hargrove's death was acknowledged on his Facebook page Saturday.

Hargrove was discovered by Wynton Marsalis while Hargrove was still in high school, Pitchfork reported. After a year at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Hargrove's career took off. Not only did he perform with jazz legends, including Sonny Rollins and Herbie Hancock, he also crossed genres and contributed to albums by Erykah Badu, D'Angelo and Common, among others, Pitchfork reported.

Actor Don Cheadle mourned Hargrove on Twitter, calling him "a beautiful soul" and "young lion."
