Thunder Task Force nabs more than 500

ATLANTA,None — A multi-agency task force has arrested more than 500 people in metro Atlanta in just the first two nights.

The Thunder Task Force is sweeping the streets of Atlanta with roving roadblocks and patrols, and making safety stops at checkpoints.

"We're not just focusing on the highways," Lt. Ron Miniatis of the Atlanta Police Department said. "We're in the neighborhoods. We're on the surface streets."

Police said they were focused on three initiatives: reducing accidents, fatalities and crime in general.

"Along with dozens and dozens of DUI drivers, we've arrested several people for outstanding warrants for armed robbery, (seized) 15 pounds of marijuana on a traffic stop," Miniatis said.

That bust came after a routine stop for a cracked windshield.

The task force made 267 arrests on Thursday night and another 277 on Friday night.

"I think we've got more than we realized ... it's been a very good two nights," Miniatis said.

Police are looking to make a lasting impact. They said around 150 officers are out and could be right around the corner.

They'll continue the safety checkpoints through the weekend.
