GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A 27-year-old man was killed after being hit by a truck on Pleasant Hill Road on Monday night, Gwinnett police said.
Phillip Payne, of Lawrenceville, was driving a light duty commercial truck on Pleasant Hill Road when a man walked into his path from the sidewalk, according to Gwinnett police Cpl. Edwin Ritter. The collision happened at about 8:15 p.m.
Ritter said Payne stepped on the brakes, but couldn't avoid hitting the pedestrian, later identified as 27-year-old Arnulfo Portillo.
Portillo sustained life-threatening injuries and died on the scene, Ritter said.
Officers were initially unable to identify Portillo, because they said he had no identification on him. They said he was believed to be homeless.
The Gwinnett County Police Accident Investigation Unit will continue to investigate the incident, but Ritter said Payne is not expected to be charged with any traffic violations. He said the area where Portillo attempted to cross the roadway was clearly marked as a pedestrian do not cross area.
