CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Clayton County Public Schools canceled all physical education classes and outdoor activities on Wednesday amid poor air quality and extreme heat in the area.

The district has established a Red Level for the heat index between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.

A district spokesperson said that indoor physical education classes “can occur with proper limitations to include close monitoring of participants with frequent water breaks and breaks from physical activity.”

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Eboni Deon says the temperature could near triple digits on Wednesday afternoon, with an even higher heat index.

In addition, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division, has issued an Air Quality Alert for Metro Atlanta.

The district said that scheduled sporting events will remain, with the ultimate decision to play or adjust the start time to be made by the Georgia High School Association.

Parents and guardians are asked to keep their students out of the heat when planning any after-school activities and to make sure their students are properly hydrated.
