Newnan residents upset after KKK flyers left in driveways

NEWNAN, Ga.,None — A flyer claiming to be from the Ku Klux Klan is showing up in local driveways.

Residents of at least three neighborhoods in Newnan said they woke up to find the flyers Sunday morning.

"It was in the driveway, in a Ziploc bag. Had two rocks in it," said Matthew Swopes, who lives in one of the neighborhoods.

The flyer has an image of a man wearing a white cloak and hood and read "Neighborhood Watch."

Below those two words, the flyer said, "You can sleep tonight knowing the Klan is awake!"

It directs people to a website and phone number to report "troubles" in their neighborhoods.

Swopes and many others said they don't want to see this type of activity close to home.

"(It) ticks me off more than anything else," Swopes said. "We're a happy little town. We don't want the reputation of the Klan being here."

The Newnan Police Department is not sure who distributed the flyers, but said they violate a city ordinance.

"The ordinance here is if one wants to give out flyers, they're supposed to come by and get a permit," Chief Douglas Meadows said.

He said the purpose is so business and property owners are aware and grant permission for flyers to be handed out when it involves private property.

Meadows said a detective reached a representative of the organization listed on the flyers, who indicated he was not aware of any local chapters in the Newnan area.
