Morris Brown College clears $9M debt with feds

ATLANTA — Atlanta's embattled Morris Brown College has one victory under its belt with the settlement of a nearly $10 million debt.

The historically black college owed $9,944,000 to the U.S. Department of Education, but had until Wednesday to pay $500,000 to clear the debt, and did so. The school spent months raising money and received a $22,000 donation from an area church to clear the debt.

Morris Brown owes millions to multiple creditors. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools revoked its accreditation in 2003, citing financial mismanagement.
