Meadowcreek High School baseball coach, 28, dies after heart attack

The baseball coach at Meadowcreek High School died early Thursday, one week after fainting while playing softball, according to his family. Bond Crosby was 28.

Crosby, a Valdosta native, suffered a massive heart attack and underwent emergency quadruple bypass surgery at Emory St. Joseph's Hospital, his family posted on a Caring Bridge site. He underwent additional procedures and remained in critical condition until late Wednesday, when his family said his condition worsened.

“Bond fought very hard. The doctors, nurses, and staff worked tirelessly,” the Crosby family posted online. “However, late this evening Bond’s condition took a turn for the worse. The family had time to say their goodbyes and Bond passed away peacefully at 1:00 am.”

Meadowcreek High principal Tommy Welch informed colleagues about Crosby’s death Thursday morning.

“Today has been a difficult day for the Meadowcreek High family as we learned that we have lost one of our own,” Welch said in an emailed statement. “We were notified early this morning of the passing of teacher and coach Bond Crosby. When we received word of his passing, I shared the sad news with our school’s faculty and staff”

Crosby joined the Gwinnett County school system in 2011 as a community football coach at Meadowcreek, a spokesman for the school system said Thursday. In 2012, he began teaching political science and also coached football, basketball, and baseball at the school.

“Mr. Crosby made a big impact on the lives of many students and he will be terribly missed in the classroom and on the field,” Welch said.

Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
